The Sixth Sola and The Method
Welcome to the Sixth Sola. The essence of the Sixth Sola is that we have churches and their members have been reforming for years, and yet how about we reframe our focus on transformation. And by transformation, I am referring to improving our walking in the Spirit. I suggest we review the scriptures as they were written, and we will see this call to transform, love God, love others.
I have created a process of reading, journaling, and making a commitment to engaging in a different way. I call this the Sixth Sola Method. This is a method of reading the new testament that focuses on the chronological roll out of the church. We often study individual books and letters in the new testament, but many times it seems that we treat the inerrant Word of God like prescription medicine. We give out a dose of Philippians 4:6-7 for example.
On my journey, I have memorized scripture in this way, but then after several years, I realized that I was missing a flow in my reading when desiring to connect with God on a personal level. A number of events occurred which drove me to take a step back.
The Questions
I began to ask, what is the big picture here? That was the question that kept ruminating in my mind. And I thought, wow, we have the gospels, and the twelve disciples, who often didn't understand what Jesus was up-to much of the time. I even wondered if Jesus was he talking to just the Jews, or was he sending messages through their understanding to ours in the 21st Century.
I decided to modify my approach. Instead of memorizing verses, or even studying individual books, I wanted to create a method that I could read the progression of the events, the ideas, the internal debates the early church had, and see what I found.
This meant I essentially read one chapter from the book of Acts on 28 consecutive days. I would follow the journey of the church, and then when I read the remaining new testament, the connection to the events in Acts were more clear.
I decided to attempt to piece together the movement of the Apostles with the letters and books we have, and see if there was something simple, something missing. Certainly many of us have had much Bible teaching delivered to us, but would God make this so complicated that simply reading the Scriptures ourselves would reveal all we needed to know?
Spiritu Ambulatio
And that was the founding of the Sixth Sola Method. I call it the Sixth Sola, because I discovered there is much to do with the Holy Spirit, and I was not seeing it until I repeated reading the same chapters in a methodical method, one chapter at a time.
The Five Solas have been a bedrock for 500 years of simple keys to the Christian faith that have little debate, and I wish to introduce the Sixth, Spiritu Ambulatio.
Walking in the Spirit.
Join me as I use this website to further explore the Living God's work today, in my life, and in your life.
We agree that we have a Living God, interested in calling us to serve Him, serve the Church, and use the gifts he's given us. I believe our most joyful life will be as we confidently walk in the Spirit He promised each day, in each relationship, in each challenge and circumstance we face.
This is just the beginning. I am traveling a path as well, and my intent is to share content, learnings, process, so that you may enter into the relationship with God that you may be struggling with. I certainly have. I don't have the answers for you. But I know the Guide, the Living God and His Holy Spirit desires to bring us on that journey.
Shortly, if not already, a book I wrote the last three years to describe this method, and how it has benefited my walk and is building the confidence I have to walk in the Spirit. I have many challenges myself, very different from yours, and your challenges may be much more severe than mine, and yet we have the same God who is with us.
The Book
The book will be published June 2, 2020, the title is "The Sixth Sola", and it will describe this method, and yet a book is difficult to demonstrate what I would like to share.
I plan on recording video showing what I do to read one chapter a day.
